It is with a heavy heart and deep sadness that I have to announce that, “Mel” the Lead Singer for “The Gator Alley Band” was killed in a car accident last night on his way to the gig. Mel took his part in Gator Alley very seriously, always showing honor and respect to Ronnie Van Zant. Mel has great love and respect for the music of Lynyrd Skynyrd and what Ronnie stood for. He was a husband and father to two beautiful children. Mel you are loved and will be missed. RIP my friend. You brought a richness into my life and will forever be in my heart.

I'm so sorry Susan. I haven't been able to think about anything else all day. This was quite a shock. We're praying for his family, his friends and of course the rest of the band. Take care of yourself, ok? I'm here if you need me. Love ya!

Thank you Teri. I have to say I'm still somewhat in shock. Mike is working on a tribute page for him on their web site. It was hard for me to write this. I can only imagine the hard time Mike is having.

Newspaper article about the accident.
WEEKEND ACCIDENTS CLAIM TWO LIVES
Auto accidents took the lives of two people in Modesto over the weekend. Melvin Snipes, 45, of Brentwood died in a rollover accident on Highway 99 north of Whitmore Avenue on Saturday evening. Snipes was a passenger in a Ford Explorer traveling southbound about 8:35 p.m. According to California Highway Patrol reports, it appeared the tread on a rear tire separated, causing the vehicle to lose control and roll several times. Snipes died at the scene, according to the Stanislaus County coroner's office. The driver, a 41-year-old man from Pittsburg, and another passenger, a 36-year-old woman from Brentwood, were taken to hospitals with moderate injuries, according to the CHP. The names of the driver and passenger were not available Sunday.
Roberto Alanis, 43, of Keyes, was killed in an auto accident early Saturday morning in the parking lot of California Fruit and Tomato Kitchens at 3800 Leckron Road. Alanis was driving a van at a high rate of speed in the parking lot and struck a flatbed double trailer loaded with wooden pallets and cardboard boxes, according to CHP reports. He suffered major head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the American Medical Response ambulance crew, according to the CHP report. The accident occurred at 2:35 a.m. Saturday.

i want to thank all my dsj family for seeing me thru this. Its been a long week. The band has not seen each other since this tragedy and we planned a get together tomorrow. We need to lean on each other and be together as a family. I will let you all know how it goes. I got a call today from Jennifer, (Mel's wife) today. Her voice was so completely heart broken. Its the first I have talked to her since the accident. She is such a great lady and needs all the love and suport we can give her. I would like to ask you all, (some already have) to go to the guest book and sign it. Thank you all for your help thru this www.gatoralleyband.com/thank you all

thank you Laurie. The boy is home safe and sound. And we are hanging in there with the Mel situation. Mel's wife, (jennifer) is home and doing good. Very confused and lost. But I would be too if I were in her shoe's. I Pray for her and the kids. I know she would surely thank you all for your Prayers. She is a great lady and I love her.
