Donnie Van Zant
Guitarist/Vocal for .38 Special
Donnie Van Zant, born June 11, 1952 in Jacksonville, FL. He is the younger brother to Ronnie Van Zant founder of Lynyrd Skynyrd who died tragically in a plane crash in Oct of 1977. He is also the older brother of Johnny Van Zant, who is now lead vocal for Lynyrd Skynyrd, taking his brother Ronnie’s place center stage. Donnie along with Don Barnes founded .38 Special in 1975. Donnie plays guitar and sings in the band. He has a presence on stage that compares to no other. He plays, sings and runs around the stage like a true showman. He keeps the audience going and is certain to make eye contact with as many of his fan as he can. He grew up poor, in a rough neighborhood they called, “Shanty Town”. Before settling to a life of singing Donnie had jobs. He just wasn’t sure if his music career was the right path. But with the advice of his brother Ronnie and his friend Don Barnes by his side, he soon found that music was in his blood. It was a long hard road to get where they are today. But worth every dive and tavern they have played in. He runs around the stage and sings like he has an angel on his shoulder. I’m just waiting for the day when he trips or hits one of the other band members with the microphone. But so far, I have seen that they seem to be quick on their feet and not get tangled up. They seem to know when and where he is going to move at any given time during their performance. If nothing else, Donnie keeps them on their toes and alert.
