Hello everyone. As you can see we now have a cool name for the Site. “Susan’s Wild Eyed Southern Boys”. First I have to thank Mr. Bobby Booth for all his hard work, patience, and dedication in helping me with my Love for 38 Special. Without Bobby, it would not be possible. He inspires me to do great things. He is indeed a great man. Ok Bobby, did I write everything you told me to, so I can start the 38 Special history now?
Donnie Van Zant was born on June 11th, 1952 in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born to the parents of Lacy, (a Truck Driver), and Marion, (worked at Dunkin Donuts). Donnie is one of three boys. The oldest being Ronnie Van Zant, known for the Band Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ronnie was killed in a plane crash on October 20th, 1977 on a Thursday along with band members Cassie and Steve Gaines. Donnie is the older brother to Johnny Van Zant who would later stand where his brother, (Ronnie), stood and become lead vocal for the rebirth of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
38 Special came together with band members Donnie Van Zant, Don Barnes, Jeff Carlisi, Ken Lyons, Jack Grondin and Steve Brookins. These are the original member of the band as I have read. They got their name, 38 Special, while playing in an abandoned warehouse and the police showed up with guns drawn that were 38 Specials. And so 38 Special the band was named.
They played a lot of roadside bars and small clubs, before they signed a deal in 1977 and released their first Album titled “38 Special”. They then went on tour. But it wasn’t until 1981, the Album, “Wild Eyed Southern Boys” was released and had the top hit, “Hold On Loosely”. In 1982, “Special Forces” was released with hits, “Caught Up In You” and “If I’d Been The One”. Two more Albums were released, “Tour de Force” and “Strength In Numbers”. They had their last hit in1989 with, “Second Chance”, (one of my favorites when Bobby Capps sings it), which appears on, “Rock and roll Strategy”.
Then their popularity began to fade with some. Not me or any one else who just loves their music. In 1997 the band came back with the Album, “Resolution”. Then with full force and a few band member changes through the years. I wish I could tell you who came and went and when, but I’m not that good. So if anyone out there has that info, or if I have anything wrong, please post a correction. I in no way want bad info on the board.
Now, they have played two decades together and do over 100 shows a year. At this date and time, the band members are, Donnie Van Zant, (guitar, vocals), Don Barnes, (guitar, vocals), Larry (LJ) Junstrom, (Bass), Danny Chauncey, (guitars, keys and I believe background vocals), Bobby Capps, (keys, background vocals), Gary Moffatt, (Drums).
In 2004 they release, “DRIVETRAIN”. And the songs, well, you just have to buy and listen. They really rock out with this one. Earlier this year Donnie was out for a couple of months for medical reasons but is back on the road touring. I hope you all enjoyed this bit of history and feel free to add or correct anything I may have missed.
