While searching the internet for old LS/Southern Rock band articles or interviews, etc., I found this interview with Gary. The article was promoting the release of Vicious Cycle that was released in 2003. I'm always looking for this kind of stuff, so I'll post them when I find them.
LYNYRD SKYNYRD.....30 YEARS AND COUNTING
Today, 30 years after their debut album changed the face of rock 'n' roll, we caught up with Gary to reminisce, mourn and celebrate the release of Vicious Cycle, like only good southern boys can...
Q: You guys released a 30-year anniversary album to commemorate, what else, but Lynyrd Skynyrd's 30th year in the business. How did that come to be?
Oh, it makes you want it more. I mean, for one reason or another, the good God has left me on this planet, surely I will not sit around and not do what I do naturally.
Q: Here is a question from a reader: if Ronnie, Steve and Cassie were to come back for one session, what is the one song you would have to play together?
"Simple Man" may be one, but then again, how could we leave out "Freebird" or "Sweet Home Alabama"?
Q: You've been around since the beginning and you've seen some of your bandmates die; did you ever intend on going solo or was it always a matter of keeping the Lynyrd Skynyrd name going?
Yeah, I could do stuff by myself, but Lynyrd Skynyrd touched many people and like I said, if we could get newer generations to find out about Lynyrd, then it cannot hurt.
Q: Who do you listen to among today's stars?
Man, I love Limp Bizkit, Johnny Lange, many people...
Q: Both are very talented. Another question we received from a reader: do you still feel any animosity toward Neil Young?
Oh no, that was more about musicians simply using music to stir the pot... It's funny you should ask because everyone asks, but between Harvest and everything else he has done, we're actually fans of his -- he's one of a kind.
Q: Indeed he is. Another question: what do you think about Drive-By Truckers and their album Southern Rock Opera?
Well, I know the band, but I cannot really say much about any particular tunes. There are a lot of legends about the history of Southern rock...
Q: Do you have a guilty conscience for having survived the place crash when the others did not?
No, I do not have a guilty conscience... I mean, we all go through our own ups and downs, but living my life with a guilty conscience would not make much of a difference -- not like they will come back, will they?
Q: I hate to ask this, but if you had to choose one song to play between "Sweet Home Alabama," "Simple Man" or "Freebird," what would it be? I know it's like asking a father which child he would keep...
Man, that is a tough one. Well, if we do not play "Alabama," our fans would kill us. "Freebird" is an anthem and "Simple Man" is a very nice song... so there, I can't answer!
Q: Thank you very much for your time Gary; keep on bringing the Lynyrd Skynyrd legend home!
