ok, I'm ready to step forward and show my ignorance. My Brother from another found this POS site about the top 8 solos played on a Gibson geetar. Don't get me wrong, my favorite axe is my 89 SG (just don't ask me to explain why it's in the police property locker, cause it makes me wanna cry), but this site has so many mistakes on it it makes my head hurts.>>ultimate-guitar.com/news/general_music_news/8_guitar_solos_that_transform_a_song_into_a_classic.html
Anyway, to the point:
My stand is that Allen Collins wrote and performed most of the lead duties on Freebird ironically enough on a Firebird. My BFAM says Mr. Rossington wrote and performed the slide part during the first half of the Song.
Heads up::: My BFAM is from Scotland and I am from Sweet Home Alabama, so I need to be right on this, but I can man up and admit when I'm wrong.....IF I'm wrong.........
What'll it be folks?

Hey Bubba.......I am not a guitar player, but I think the answer to your question re: who wrote what on FREEBIRD may vary, depending on what website you post that question on. I just know that it's been a highly debated subject between die hard Skynyrd fans and musicians for years. We do have a quite a few guitar players on DSJ so hopefully someone can answer your question. Chances are both you and your friend are right.

Actually, he might not have even played it on the Firebird. Some people (including me)speculate that Allen used his 1960's Gibson SG for that. It was the white one that was stolen in San Francisco in 1973 along with Gary's Goldtop Les Paul (I've got a picture of it somewhere)

I might even have that on tape but I've got over 1500 gigs of Skynyrd to look through....any body wanna do some trans scripting for me lmao

I found this on "about.com", written by Dan Cross:
Guitarist Gary Rossington used a 1961 Gibson Les Paul/SG Standard with side-pull vibrato for his slide guitar part on "Freebird". Rossington played through a Peavey Mace amp head, and a Peavey 4x12 cabinet (with the back removed to produce a more open sound) with JBL speakers.
Around 1970, when Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote the song, Rossington had just started playing slide. Rossington used a glass Coricidin bottle on his middle finger for a slide, an idea he got from Duane Allman. But when Rossington played, the bottle kept clinking against the frets because the string action was too low, so he took a screwdriver and stuck it under the strings up at the nut. He then tuned the B string down to G. When Rossington played the slide part, he would often hit the third and second strings (both now tuned to a G) together, and play them as if they were one string, to create a doubled-guitar sound.
