It is with deep saddeness and a heavy heart that I report, ( by request of Bruce) that the southern rock icon and music Legend "George McCorkle" has passed away this morning. George was know best as one of the original band members of "The Marshall Tucker Band". George wrote many songs including well known Marshall Tucker Band hit "Fire On The Mountain" His career spanned for decades and continued in 2007 with his own band called, "The Renegades". I had the pleasure of meeting George in June of 2006 along with his wife. Today the world lost a legend, and Heaven gained an Angel. I am at a loss for words. As no words I can think of can do this man justice. He touched so many people with his heart and his music. Not to mention his kind soul. This was truly a simple man that loved man kind and music. He never once turned away a request for autograph or to just say hello. I have decided to post a couple items from his sites. Words could not begin to describe the feeling I have in my heart at this moment, along with many others here I'm sure how they feel at this very moment. About George McCorkle George McCorkle was there at the headwaters of The Marshall Tucker Band. His warm, country influenced rhythm guitar was the foundation counterpoint to Toy Caldwells blazing rock lead licks. George is also the writer of the Southern Rock rallying call Fire On The Mountain. You can find out even more about George McCorkle at his web site www.georgemccorkle.com/ and www.renegadesofsouthernrock.com/ Rarely does a genre of music that is rooted in a particular region of a country find a large and enduring audience outside that region, much less outside of the country’s borders. In all of musical history few genres have taken hold and left the clear impression that Southern Rock has cast around the world. Rolling up out of the Deep South in the early 70’s, a distinct blend of rock, jazz, blues and country coagulated into a fiercely independent brand of rural rock that defined a generation. As it finds new audiences today there is still nothing like the original—the pioneers who wrote the history. That’s what The Renegades of Southern Rock embodies: founding members of faces on Southern Rock’s Mount Rock-more. The cast members of The Renegades of Southern Rock have clocked in with some of the genre’s defining moments. The stellar cast includes George McCorkle of The Marshall Tucker Band, Jack Hall from Wet Willie, Steve Grisham from the Outlaws, Taylor Caldwell of Southern Cross, and Special guest appearances by other Southern Rock Legends.. Bruce, I was too very shaken by this news this morning and I only hope that I did him justice. I will start another thread for those of you who would like to tell your story of George. I'm sure Bruce will be sure they are given to Vivi.

My sincere condolences Vivi, Justin and to Bruce as well. I am so very sorry. Forget if you can, that I ever frowned And remember me for my smile. Forget any unkind words from my mouth; Just remember some good I have done. Forget all about any heartache And remember we had loads of fun. Try not to grieve for my passing, I would not have you sad for one day. In the summer just gather some flowers And come to the place where I lay. Find me in the shade of evening, as the sun paints the sky to the west. Stand for a few moments beside me And remember me for my best.
If there's anything I can do, don't hesititate to ask

Today, I lost my best friend. The world lost the greatest man I have ever known... Susan thank you for you kind words. George and Viv are very fond of you. I have been asked to make the annoucements for his services: First, thank you all for the wonderful thoughts, memories, and kind words. George was indeed the last of the Singing Cowboys. I have been asked to announce the memorial information. There will be a small memorial service in Carthage, Tennessee For his friends, neighbors, and family here. It will be held at: Carthage United Methodist Church from 4-8PM this Sunday 608 N. Main St., Carthage TN Monday morning George will be put on a Tour Bus and take his last ride home to Spantanburg. Funeral will be at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg where he can be laid to rest with his family, Toy and Tommy. Funeral will take place at 11:00AM. I believe there will be a visitation from 9:30-10:30 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. I will verify this tomorrow and let you all know. Thank you again, from George's family. George truly loved his fans.

Bruce, You are very welcome. I was so worried about you this morning when you called. I could tell your heart was broken and that tore me up. I only wished i could reach thru the phone and hug you. I wish i was able to make the funeral. But I can not. Will you please give vivi my phone number? i had her's and lost it. I would like to talk to her when things calm down. Tell her i love her and am very sorry for her loss. I am going to try to write up a little something on George if you don't mind. Just give ma a few days. i just feel the urge to. And Bruce, you and Denise know my numbers if you just need to talk or unload. We love you. I know I don't need to say this, but take care of each other. And call if you need to just talk.
Susan & Randy

Hey bro I know you are hurting bad with that big empty hole right in your chest. Really sorry to hear about your best friend... I hate that you are hurting so bad. After talking to you last night I knew how much he really meant to you. I know you will make the best tribute for him that only a true friend can. He was a big man. He stood strong. And he was well loved. I want to thank you for getting George to the jukin parties. It was so cool to meet him and his wife last year an on July 4th. Such a sweet man and so down to earth. I sure did want to jam with him. I wished I could've come out to the house more often to spend more time with him and Viv. My heart goes out to Vivi and Justin also to you and Denise. Hang in there brother ...you sure do have alot of friends to help you through this.... don't forget that What ever you need just give a holler. I'll see you Sunday. Love ya bro!

Bruce, Man my heart goes out to you and George's family over his sudden passing. If you need anything that I can do bro dont hesitate to ask. Stay focused and use what you learned from George and with the help of God, family and friends to resolve a closure that yields new source of strength, esp in time's of crisis as well as joy.. Hang in there my friend and remember. God has a plan for everyone.
Your friend Chris Reeder

I've been without a computer for about 3 days....sorry for the late post, Bruce. I never had the pleasure of meeting George, but I sure felt like I knew him. I feel like I have a very big hole in my heart. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and you too, Bruce. May God help all of you deal with your loss in the days ahead. Rest in peace George....and thank you for everything you gave the world through your music.
