Rocking Into The New Year with 38 Special
Sure glad 2006 and was going out because around the concert hall at Penns Peak in Jim Thorpe Pennsylvania the last few moments of the old year were not wanted. Couple of car wrecks, one minor but the other one put a telephone pole across the road forcing a road closure that lasted into the New Year. When the opening act for 38 Special Raymond the Amish Comic was doing his routine one of the overhead stage light caught fire. They had to clear the pit area which was standing room because the malfunctioning stage light was directly over the crowd. It was a TENSE moment for all as the Roadie mounted the light scaffolding and crawled to where the fire was and bravely put out the fire and SAVED the concert and the New Year. Ironically speaking in previous reviews of 38 I penned that the local fire company was backstage prepared to put out 38's blazing guitars. Showtime and everyone was magically transported to Southern Rock and Roll Heaven. Like their brothers before them Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allmans, Outlaws, Marshall Tucker, Molly Hatchet, and the Charlie Daniels Band to name a few they do not dissapoint. A solid 25 years on the road means a highly polished, well tuned music machine. Their two guitarists, Don Barnes and Danny Chauncey who change rolls of lead and rythym more than Madonna changes her clothes on the set of her concert stage are a force to be reckoned with. Watching Don Barnes pound the bridge of his guitar with the intro of Trooper with an Attitude off their current album Drivetrain is a once in a lifetime must see. Sort of like seeing the Grand canyon or Niagara Falls at night, simply awe inspiring. Chauncey lights up the stage with his fiery leads and solos like the Aurora Borealis lights up the Northern Sky. He is not afraid to stand right in front of you and wail away while he does his wizardry. Keeping perfect time in the Bass department is none other than Larry Jungstrom who spent many years as Lynyrd Skynyrd's Bass player and he is still one of the best at what he does. On drums is Mr. Gary Moffat and when the band leaves the stage to let Gary do his drum solo they get a good 5 minute break as GM pounds on the skins and the and the metal discs we all call cynbals. I know Keith Moon is smiling down upon Gary whenever he does his drum solo. The Keyboard department is Bobby Capps job, he is a.master at what he does. When his time comes to perform what the band calls his song, This Heart Needs a Second Chance all eyes are upon him. I think you can hear a couple of hearts reaching out to him everytime he sings this Love song. The audience is hushed as they are treated to a crowd favorite. Rounding out our sextet of Southern Rock champions is none other than Donnie Van Zant who hails from one of Southern Rocks most famous families the Van Zant's. Brother Ronnie of course being the most famous paving the way for his other brothers to make their mark in music history. Than theres Johnny who now takes over his Brother Ronnie's job as Lead Singer and Frontman of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Donnie owns the stage, captures the audience and does not let go of them till 38 leaves the stage. Vocals, backing accoustic rythym guitar, running from one end of the stage to the other pumping his fist or swinging his mic standfully around in air as he rotates numerous times or jabbing the mic out above the crowd. He might even put the microphone in front of you so you can sing along. Like his other Brothers, Donnie is a natural born leader. He could have gone anywhere in life and succeeded but his Big Brother Ronnie laid down the groundwork for all of us to enjoy the many fine talents his younger brother has.
Here is the Setlist for New Years Eve 2006 courtesy of Mr. John Lavoti one heck of a sound technician and sound board specialist, but by far the GREATEST public relation man that any band could ever ask for. He came over to us and other people 10 minutes before 38 came on to express holiday wishes. I told him I was doing this review for Southern Fried and asked if he could get me their setlist after the concert. He reached into his pocket and handed me his setlist immediately without any hesitation.

The band took a break at this time and went backstage, the big screen came down and on it was the Times Square countdown to the New Year. Everybody counted down the last ten seconds of 2006 and then the band came back on to celebrate the New Year with us, wishing all of us a Happy New Year before they broke into their encore which consisted of
