2006 has finally arrived. Happy New Year Everyone!!!!!
We will gladly say goodbye to 2005, it sure the hell scared the bejesus
out of some of us Southern Rock Fans with Johnnie Van Zant going into
the hospital to get polyps removed from his vocal chords. Skynyrd having
to cancel their tour dates, yuck what a ROTTEN year and I am quite sure
one or two of us might of thought could this be the end of his singing
career. HELL NO not a Van Zant they are not quitters and they don't go
down without a fight and he is back with a vengance singing and sounding
like the JVZ that we know and love. Big brother Donnie sure the hell
scared the sh_t out of us to when he went into the hospital with knee
problems I believe. I could be wrong on that one but I know he was out
of action for awhile. His group kept on holding down the fort while
Donnie was recuperating. It might seem strange seeing 38 Special without
DVZ but every review I read said the boys did him and their fans proud.
Could this be the end of Donnie running all over the stage thrilling the
crowd with every antic in the book while singing and playing guitar. Not
on your life remember the Van Zants don't have the word quit in their
dictionary. 38 Special is back in full swing with their band leader Guy
Lombardo aka DVZ back at the helm
The Hootys New Year started out on the right foot with back to back
Skynyrd concerts 13 days into the New Year. It was AWESOME to say the
very least. Met some old friends and met some NEW ones as well. We had a
GREAT time hanging out with them all before and after the concerts. We
got a NEW addition to our Guitar Pic family. One I had desired for a
long time since I first laid eyes on it. It is a Rickey Medlocke
signature Lynyrd Skynyrd guitar pic. It will be taking a ride to the
jewelers very soon to be drilled at the point and fitted with a jewelers
eye so I can PROUDLY wear it on my necklace at the next Skynyrd concert
we go to. Thanks Big Rick for giving that to me after you got done
playing Freebird. We paid the price and were at the doors 4 hours before
they opened but when the action started we were CENTER STAGE and
directly in front of Johnnie. Mrs Hooty got a tambourine from the
opening bands lead singer. He threw it in her direction and there were
many hands trying for it but Mrs H... is a hell of a scrapper when it
comes to things bein thrown her way. Later she got it signed by the
whole band which BTW is called PDQ out of St Louis. They have come a
long way since we first seen them and have gotten so much better. One of
the NEW things I would like to touch on also is the Country Duo Van
Zant, Donnie and Johnnie. They are sort of a Rockabilly style and not
old Country. They were nominated for Country Duo of the Year by CMA
amongst some very stiff competition didn't win but for their very first
venture they have definitely made a NAME for themselves in another Genre
of Music. They will be on tour with Gretchen Wilson and it will be
called the Redneck Revolution Tour in between their own tours of their
respective bands of Lynyrd Skynyrd and 38 Special. So definitely my
friends this New Year will be throwing us all some new and exciting
things. Maybe even that Gary Rossington Blues Album that we heard awhile
back was in the making. Also heard Jvz talking in an interview about
hints of a NEW Skynyrd album this year. I am quite sure there will also
be a ton of new concerts being played around your neck of the woods. One
of Hootys favorite places to check for concert happenings is Pollstar.
You can do a concert search by City, Artist, or Venue. Also check out
the DSJ boards or the Van Zants, 38 Specials or Lynyrd Skynyrds websites
for NEW concerts. HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone here at DSJ. The Hootys
wish for all here is a Healthy, Happy and Prosperous New Year with front
row seats for everybody at their favorite concert Till next time All I Can Do is Write About It
