Tickets selling darn quick for redneck ‘Romeo and Juliet’
For The Russellville Courier
Russellville, AK — If you want to see Danville High School’s “redneck version” of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” at 7 p.m. Friday or Monday, you need to buy your ticket soon. Tickets are selling quickly.
This adaptation of the classic features (almost) all things redneck, including fights, goat roasts, hunting, four-wheeling, pickup trucks, alien abductions, teen marriage, reformed hippies and Elvis.
Classic redneck music by Lynyrd Skynyrd, Hank Williams Jr., AC/DC, David Allan Coe, Confederate Railroad and Billy Idol highlights the action and comedy of the production.
The play follows the forbidden romance of Romeo Mountagoose, portrayed by sophomore Cody Wells, and Juliet Calflick, portrayed by eighth-grade student Emily Patton.
The cast also includes Jasmine Balch as Aint GeeGee (the nurse), Trevor McLeron as Prior Warrants (Friar Laurence), Scotty Short and Kayla Coppedge as Floyd and Sadie Calflick, Tina Phouthavong as Juliet’s younger sister Juniper, Terry Ford and Sadeidre Smith as Loyd and Daisy Mountagoose, Christy Vosburg as Juliet’s friend Florine, Devon Essman as Rosy Lynn (Rosaline), Danielle Erdelin as funeral director Sassy Yokel, and Katie Frazier as Weekly Record society columnist Gladys Jones.
The role of Sher’f Earl (Prince Escalus) will be filled by a surprise guest. Vocal entertainment will be provided by Corinna Rose and Haley Patterson.
The March 16 performance will include a dinner theater featuring fried chicken, fried deer meat, fried taters, corn on the cob, cornbread, biscuits, RC Cola, iced tea and Moon Pies.
Students are now selling advance adult tickets for $7 and advance child tickets (12 and under) for $4. Tickets will also be available at the door for $8 and $5 (if the production does not sell out in advance).
Monday’s performance does not include dinner and advance tickets are $4 for adults and $1 for children, and $5 and $2 at the door.
