MAN! WOW! AWESOME! AMAZING! And whatever other great words there are to describe the best concert I've ever seen! If next years line-up is anything like this years, then get your passes as soon as they become available! Here's the bands I saw, Leon Russell, The Wreckers, Billy Joe Shaver, Robert Earl Keen, Miranda Lambert, and Lynyrd Skynyrd! And I was 10 feet from the stage for all but Billy Joe Shaver. He was at another of the 5 stages at the "Big State festival" in College Station Texas Oct. 13th and 14th! Two stock car races, 42 world champion BBQ teams, and 30,000 people the first day! Folks I wish all of ya'll could have been there and you may not know it, but so do you!
It was a little wierd in one way tho. Robert Earl Keen, one of my favorite living songwriters released an album called No.2 Live in 1996 and it features his song " The road goes on forever" (and the party never ends) It was also recorded by "The highwaymen" ( Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson) Anyway in the intro to "The road" Robert tells of how he went to the second Willie Nelson 4th of July jam at this very same Texas world speedway in College Station. He says that after partying all day (In the Willie way) He fell asleep only to be woke up by the P.A. announcer saying that 40 cars had burned up in the grass parking lot! And the first tag number he read out was Roberts dads car that he had taken to the show without permission from his home in Austin! OOPS! He said as he sat in the burned grass and cried LOL A man with the venue came and told him the least they could do for him was to let him meet Willie Nelson! Said it cheered him up some! Well he went backstage to Willies bus and out came Willie, shook his hand and said he wished he could stay and talk but he had to go jam with Leon Russell! Now the wierd part of this story is Willie, Leon and Robert were all here Saturday and damned if 20 cars didn't catch fire and burn up in the parking lot!! Maybe Robert has a fan that went a little too far LOL Or that was a hell of a coincidence! Any way As for how Skynyrd did, well let me put it this way, poor ol Lyle Lovett and his Large band had to have the sad luck of drawing the same time slot to jam as Skynyrd on another stage and well he just got outgunned by the Skynyrd fans! The few folks that were there for him were not able to hear him all that well because of the "Skynyrd fans" maybe 15 or 20,000 screaming Skyn heads were behind me going crazy for the whole 1 1/2 hours of perfect Skynyrd!! They were absolutlely dead on note for note and Johnny was in amazing voice! Here I was 10 feet away and just loving it! Even got a pick from Sparky and Rickey. Sounds like I was a Hooty for a day huh? Well it gets better, the next day me and Mary Ann decided to go get breakfast before going to day 2 and seeing Jack Ingram, Bruce and Charlie Robison, Willie Nelson, Drive-by truckers, and Tim McGraw. We found a dennys but decided it was too crowded and drove all over College Station until we found an IHOP and still had to wait outside to be seated. I hate that crap, but in this case it worked out pretty cool. While we were waiting this group of folks came up and were talking about whether to wait to eat or go somewhere else. Mary Ann grabbed my arm and said " I think that's Sparky" And of course I said no way crazy lady! Well he turned around and sure enough it was! I waited until his conversation with the other people with him had a lull and I eased over and sort of whispered umm are you who I think you are? And he said yep if you think I'm sparky! I laughed and said yep, well man you guys blew em all away last night and he thanked me and I told him who I was and that I write some little articles for Southern Fried and you know what? He said oh you're Jody? And he shook my hand again, using both hands!! Wow! He said to thank Bruce and DSJ and SF for supporting southern rock. LOL His dad said "I'm his dad" And his mom said " I'm his mom" And I said well you done good mom! We talked a few more minutes and they all left to go find a quicker place to eat. We went to the concert and loved Willie, Jack Ingram, Drive-by truckers but it started raining on Tim McGraw and we left before we drownded, besides I never thought Ol Tim could really sing anyway, talks good, but he has no range for singing in my mind, maybe a great guy but oh well. Have to say I felt sorry for Dierks Bentley too for having to go play on another stage the same time Robert Earl Keen, (an A&M Grad.) played our stage. Crowd wise he got swamped. I know this was one of the best weekends I've ever had! Here's a few pics.
