You know in life folks need heroes. Someone other than their parents to look up to. And we all would like to meet and become friends with these heroes. It rarely happens and when it does nine times out of ten you come away disappointed. These so called heroes are often uppity and rude when met close up. Ya'll all know that Ronnie Van Zant is a hero of mine. I haven't met him...yet. In 2005 we had a gathering at Bobby and Jenny Booths house west of Nashville as most of you know. There were a couple of heroes of mine there. One was a new hero of mine, Bruce Wall. You all know him. He's a hero of mine because of his love and dedication to the greatest music on earth. Southern rock! The other was an old hero of mine for the same reason. George McCorkle. Twice that day I was not let down in the least!
Not only were my hopes realized but man they were greater than I could have hoped for. I, me, yea little old me, had the chance two years in a row to sit and talk with George and people there are very few times in my life that I've met anyone and seconds later would trust them with my life. And I met two that day. Bruce I love you bro. Those that have met George will all say the same thing. Instant, real trust is there. A true American and a nicer more real person just can't be found. The same can be said for Vi Vi. I sat and talked with the man for maybe an hour. I asked him things like, what was his favorite show he ever done. And he said when the M.T.B. sold out Madison square garden. He said he knew then that southern rock was no longer just a regional thing. His pride was for the music I could plainly see. Then I asked him what he would do if it ended today, if he wasn't popular and had no more fans. He said Jody I'd have to laugh! I said laugh? Hell I'd probably cry if it was me. He said no brother, you wouldn't, because the ride itself was worth the trip. A humble man speaking from his heart! He said he's never stopped being amazed at the love people have for him and the band. Didn't consider himself worthy. His thoughts, like everything about him are real. Yesterday I had some thoughts and prayers to God that were just not all that nice at first. He'd taken a friend of mine home and I wanted to know why. He's taken sooo many great southern rockers home. I listened to one of my favorite George songs last night "The Journey home" and was made to realize that God needed one more thing for the band he's putting together in heaven... a rythym guitarist! Now he has the BEST!!
I have thanked George for his friendship in person. I have thanked Vi Vi and Justin for theirs. I want to enjoy it until we all meet at that show up there. Man! What a show it will be!
I'm crying now so....
