One year ago Gene and I traveled to the Waldorf Astoria in New York City for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction of Lynyrd Skynyrd. All of those festivities have been well documented. But one incident that happened on our way is worth telling.
We were approximately one hour north of the Virginia/North Carolina line on I 95. Traffic was heavy but moving at a brisk 80 mph. I noticed the vehicle three positions ahead of us swerve into the right lane and over correct back to the left skidding completely out of control. The first impact was the embankment after leaving the paved surface. The car then started spinning and striking some pine trees that were in the median. During the revolutions everything in the car, except the driver came out the windows. After two or three violent impacts with the trees the car came to halt sitting right side up on all four wheels.
During this accident traffic began to slow down. When I came to a stop our vehicle was just ahead of the spot where the wrecked vehicle came to rest. Gene got out first and rushed to the crashed car. When I got there I saw it was a young girl late teens or early 20’s. She was jerking her head violently from side to side. Gene grabbed her head and stopped her movement.
When I reached her I noticed that the engine was still running. I switched the car off
And cut the seat belts. I looked at her face and it was turning purple. Gene told me that there was a hole in the right side of her head. He put his hand over it to stop the bleeding. I said a little prayer… It was about 10 to 12 minutes before the emergency team could reach our area. Gene held her head the entire time. About 5 minutes before the rescue squad arrived, she opened her eyes and asked what had happened. She began to cry. Gene asked her name and she responded.
When the rescue people arrived, they tried to put Gene on the gurney . I had to explain that Gene was not in the car. A bit of humor in a tragic situation. She was alert and talking when they placed her in the ambulance.
On our trip back Gene and I talked about this incident. Being in the right place at the right time, to help someone. That was the reason we were supposed to go…………..
