It is with deep regret that I post the following.
Billy Powell (June 3 1952 - January 28, 2009) died early this morning of an apparent heart attack, he was 56.
I, personally, would like to extend my deepest sympathies to his family and friends and of course to the the band. I believe I speak for all of us when I say he will be greatly missed. The members and family of "Freebird" (my tribute band) offer our prayers and support to his family and the band during this very difficult time.
Billy was one of the greatest piano players of all time. His intro to Freebird was known the world over and his musical exploits with Lynyrd Skynyrd are legendary. I'm sure most here know his history with the band so I won't go into it here. I just want to say, as someone who portrays him in a tribute band, that he is one of my idols. His unique style and fun loving attitude on stage have changed my life for the better and that his contibution to Lynyrd Skynyrd can never be duplicated or replaced.
Again, my deepest sympathies to the band and his family. He was truly one of the greats of Rock'n'Roll.
Fly on Freebird - to the big jam in the sky.
